gingerbread!

I love the smell of gingerbread.  Gingerbread in the oven fills my kitchen with Christmasy happiness.  After the warm gingerbread-scented air subsides, I sniff the cookies.  I’m not proud… but it is soooo good.  Read more…

dreaming of a green christmas

Last Spring, we planted new bushes in front of our house.  Since 2014, our front garden has been a sad and barren wasteland in Winter.  So when we chose our new plants, we selected mostly evergreens.  It has been a total revelation.  2016 was not the best year ever, but a little green in Winter helps a bit.   Read more…

“cozy New Englandy” Christmas cookies

Remember when I was making crazy bright Christmas cookies?  That was so 2 weeks ago.  I dramatically changed the color mood for this set.  I was starting to worry that they were a little drab when a friend said they have a “cozy newenglandy feel.” Read more…

the good deal tutorial.

Here’s a secret that every winter cookier should know: piping pine/ coniferous needles is crazy easy.  The end result looks like it requires way more skill and effort than it actually does.  It’s like getting a really good deal– this design is the 40% off coupon code of cookies. Read more…

inspired by neckties

I love men’s ties.  I secretly wish the 1980s women’s necktie trend would come back in fashion.  I openly wish my husband were a necktie kind of guy.  But alas, microbiologists dress like college freshmen.   Read more…

I’m dreaming of a bright Christmas

I try to pace my posts this time of year, but inevitably, I end up doing a Christmas Eve blog dump.   Read more…

home renovations and cookie decorations

I had a very busy weekend.  I finished my Christmas cookies AND we completed the living room renovation.  I am feeling super crafty and handy right now.  I am also feeling tired, so I will keep this short.  Merry everything, everyone!

options paralysis

It is already December 8 and I am still searching for this year’s holiday style.  I started out with a retro theme, which morphed into an ugly sweater theme, which has devolved into a total free-for-all.   Read more…

christmas cookie overload

After a first (less than bold) attempt to upend the tyranny of red and green, I attacked my second batch of holiday cookies with more whimsy and less timidity.  But… I still wanted to strike the right balance between revolution and tradition.  The aqua and pink are close enough to red and green to make these recognizable as holiday cookies but different enough to change the overall effect.  I love them. the cookie compromise

The intense negotiations over the fiscal cliff have prevented me from taking any real time off in December.  It would be too kind say that our friends on the Hill have made it a tense holiday season. BUT… nothing gets between me and holiday baking.  I have spent every spare waking hour since Thanksgiving with the only known cure for Washington’s political consternation: icing bags and the History Guys.
