A little bit Nordic

finally finished my Christmas cookies yesterday.  I didn’t intend to bake a lot of cookies this year.  We are not traveling for Christmas.  My husband and my two year old can only eat so many cookies.  Actually, they can eat a lot of cookies.  But they shouldn’t.

Blue and White (and Red and Green) Christmas

My husband’s aunt (my aunt in-law?) is a real cook and baker.  I’m a hobby cookie decorator. She is the real deal.  Nate eats all of my cast off rejected cookies.  During the holidays, this means a lot of cookies.  By the time we get to Christmas, Nate declares that he cannot eat another cookie.  And then his aunt hands him a bag of sugary buttery baked goods and suddenly he can actually eat another cookie (or ten.)

Cute and easy s’mores

I’m a  camp girl.  I went to residential summer camp in New Hampshire from age 8 to age 21.  It’s my favorite place; I still go back for family camp every summer. Read more…

6th Birthday Luau

My niece is turning 6 this weekend AND we are moving to our new house.  So in the midst of packing, sorting, donating, and losing my mind, I took some time out to make a special set of birthday cookies.  She’s my favorite girl and this occasion deserves a special treat. Read more…

rainbows and unicorns

I made these cookies for a very special little girl’s fourth birthday.  Designing and decorating them was an absolute delight.  These are the cookies I wish someone had made for me for my fourth birthday.  Given the reaction by other little girls in my life, I have a feeling this will not be the last time I make rainbow and unicorn cookies this year. it’s not christmas without cookies.

With an 18 month old, it is getting harder and harder to make time for cookies.  My plan was to dramatically scale back on holiday baking this year.  It was a plan.  I was going to stick to it.  And then I realized that, for me, cookies are the whole point. Read more…

Mermaid birthday!

My feisty little niece turns 5 in 2 weeks.  She loves to dance and make up silly songs.  She loves to play with dolls and dress up in sparkly clothes.  She loves to travel and see new things.  And she really loves mermaids.  And I love her, so I made mermaid cookies to celebrate her big day. My big, sweet, funny boy turns ONE on May 31.  It has been a busy, happy whirlwind of a year.  To celebrate, we are throwing an ocean-themed party for our big big guy. Read more…

Baby’s First Bunnies

I had too many encounters with scary mall Easter Bunnies as a child and as a result, I do not love Easter.  But my 7-year old nephew loves Easter.  He loves the Easter Bunny, he loves dying eggs, he loves Easter candy– he enjoys all the secular Easter traditions.  Now that I have a child, I’m going to give the Easter Bunny another chance. Paw Patrol!

A month ago, I knew nothing about Paw Patrol.  It is apparently a very big deal for kids of a certain age (and their parents.)  A friend asked me to make Paw Patrol cookies for her daughter’s 3d birthday.  Of course, I could not resist (she is a seriously great kid and her parents aren’t bad either.)  When word got around that I was making these cookies, I was suddenly in the middle of a lot of Paw Patrol conversations.   Read more…

We became parents, not Neanderthals.

I have a friend who dazzles me with her ability to be amazing all of the time.  She wears cute clothes, her house is spectacular, and she throws fabulous parties (large and small.)  She can make a gathering of 3 people feel like a special event.  When I went to meet her new baby, she had a beautiful spread on her dining room table.  I asked her how she managed to be a new mom and a perfect hostess.  She replied, “We became parents, not Neanderthals.”   Read more…

Turkey time!

When I was pregnant people kept asking me if belly button had popped.  I kept repeating that it was not a turkey timer.  Eventually, we started calling the baby “turkey.”  It stuck.  He is almost 6 months old and we still call him Turkey.  Fast forward to Thanksgiving and the nickname has become hilarious.   On an up note, he has received lots of turkey-themed gifts this Fall and I was gifted a neat turkey cookie cutter. Charlie Brown Halloween

I’m baaaack!  I look a little break to, you know, have a baby.  I have made a lot of really great cookies, but this little boy is absolutely the best thing I have ever made. He is fat and funny and I’m just nuts about him. Read more…

mixing bowl sunday

Superbowl Sunday is my day in our house.  It is the day when Nate goes off to watch football and I have the house to myself.  I cheerily bake Valentine cookies and snuggle in with Masterpiece.  It is one of my favorite days of the year.   Read more…

gingerbread!

I love the smell of gingerbread.  Gingerbread in the oven fills my kitchen with Christmasy happiness.  After the warm gingerbread-scented air subsides, I sniff the cookies.  I’m not proud… but it is soooo good.  Read more…
